Stories and photos relay a first-hand account of the Amazon's largest tributary while exposing the important role of people, politics, and economics in preserving the rainforest.
Learn how the annual collection of millions of fish for the aquarium trade supports the rainforest. In 2006 Randy traveled through the Amazon rainforest on a two-week expedition up the Rio Negro, the Amazon’s largest tributary. The expedition was sponsored by Project Piaba, a Brazilian-based organization that works with the government and local fishermen. Randy’s assignment was to write a series of articles on the various issues surrounding the collection of freshwater fish for the aquarium trade. His conclusion is that these small fish are a renewable resource that creates a viable economy for the people of the rainforest, and that this economy encourages them to maintain the rainforest.
This presentation is Randy’s narrative of his experiences that build upon the insights gained by being there with the people along the river. It is filled with his photos from the rainforest and of the people.
