Jackie was far more than the first black man to play Major League baseball. He was also totally committed, well educated, well dressed, very articulate, likable, kind, a great athlete and most of all smart. I know this because I was his batboy for eight years. He was smart enough to know what his opponents were going to do before they did it. He knew they wanted to hurt him. And he used that to his advantage. And he used me to help him do that.
