A disease most folks don't notice, kills a few. Then there's me. It changed my life. ...One of the best local storytellers I know is retiring today. I am taking the unusual step of dedicating the entire column to him because he has so much to teach us all about video storytelling. Those of you in the print and online worlds who are trying to learn multimedia, draw near. Here is a guy who can teach you something. - Tom Lindner, Vice President and News Director, KARE 11 TV
We have a lot of seasoned journalists come through and talk to our students. Ken stands head and shoulders above the pack because he is all about stories - not writing, not ego, not how I beat the other guy to this source, how I toppled the politician, saved the world, or won a prize. - Mindy McAdams, Online Journalism Professor , University of Florida.
The Redwood Area Hospital brought Mr. Speake to Redwood Falls this past summer (August, 2007) to talk about his experience with West Nile Virus. He shared his story, along with his wife Donna, and together they gave our audience a real look as to what it was like from the onset of his disease to the present. Ken brought video clips to show the disease progression and how it affected him, Donna spoke of things Ken didn't even recall happening when he was sick and in the hospital and leading up to being hospitalized. The two of them provided a good picture of the effects the disease not only has on an individual but to the family unit. Mr. Speake drew members of the audience to our presentation from his wonderful work at KARE 11 as well as because of his disease. It made it much easier to market this event to our community. - Shelly Pauling, Education and Communication Manager, Redwood Falls Area Hospital, Redwood Falls, Minnesota
