If the military were your biggest customer, wouldn't you be delighted if you could land a former Procurement Officer to manage your sales efforts? If your law firm defended white-collar clients, wouldn't it be a coup to score a former prosecutor in the same area? The sort of "unfair advantage" one needs to compete?

Since 1984, Matt Baron has been in the business of crafting stories. For nearly all of that time, he has been a newspaper reporter. Now, as president of Inside Edge: Public Relations & Media Services, he provides that insider's edge for clients seeking to navigate the media jungle.

Starting in 2001, Matt has trained media professionals through programs such as Go Figure: Making Numbers Count, Life-Saving Tips for Deadline Reporting and Conflict Reporting. He also regularly trains public relations professionals, business leaders and others on how to maximize their chances of securing media coverage.

Matt's experience in the fast-paced world of daily journalism has enabled him to hone superior interviewing and interpersonal skills amidst a variety of pressures. From parents of murder victims to targets of investigative reporting, he knows how to draw out even the most reluctant and identify the significant from the seemingly mundane.

A graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Matt's work has appeared as a syndicated column and in a variety of national and regional publications.

They include the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Parent, USA Today, Time and Sports Illustrated. He has developed not only strong media connections, but also a first-person insight into how reporters, editors and producers think, their day-to-day challenges, and what draws them to one story idea over another.

Matt resides in the Chicago area with his wife, Bridgett, and their twin children, Zachary and Maggie Rose."

Journalists often overlook the importance of using numbers to tell a story to readers. Matt Baron breaks that barrier. He shows how numbers are not only an important part of storytelling, but they can also be revealing, compelling and sometimes even fun. Matt's ability to think numbers amazes me. - Scott Stone, Editor/general manager, The Daily Herald

Matt, thanks for your Go Figure presentation to the Chicago bureau. You raised some great points that reminded us all that numbers tell their own stories-and they better be accurate. The Golympics game was eye-opening fun about how many surprising ways good numbers can go bad and end up misleading readers. - Marguerite Michaels, former Chicago bureau chief, Time magazine

Convention attendees absolutely loved your presentation, Matt. De-mystifying the numbers and helping them to make sense out of the complex writing situations those numbers present definitely resonated. - Brenda Reed, executive director, New England Press Associatio
